Belgium GP: Pitlane penalties

Whoever wrote the script of Belgium GP has to be someone who's fond of action movies - the kinds where cars slide, screech, jump over and run into one another. Even the slowest part of the track - the pit lane wasn't spared. Besides the heartbreak and grim reaction on Nicole Scherzinger's face when her boy toy crashed at turn one, there were 3 more incidents in & around the pit lane which caught stewards' eye.

Belgium GP: Is Romain Grosjean's penalty fair?

Rookie driver Romain Grosjean was responsible for causing a multi-car pileup at the first corner of Belgium GP. The Lotus driver started the race from 4th row on the grid on P8, alongside Lewis Hamilton. As the red lights went off, he moved left to get ahead of Lewis Hamilton and as the corner approached, he moved further left trying to squeeze ahead of the Brit. Clearly misjudging the braking and width of his car, Grosjean ended up colliding with the former world champion and it soon spiraled into 4-car pile. When the dust settled 4 drivers - Romain Grosjean, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso & Sergio Perez were out of the race. The later duo had started their race from P4 & P5.

Red Bull Racing: The Season So Far

After a very topsy-turvy first half that was filled with drama, excitement, tension and controversy, Formula One is taking a much required break. So before we head back to the race track, let’s take a quick look at the season so far.

For the champions - Red Bull Racing, and their drivers Sebastian Vettel & Mark Webber, this season has been quite a challenge.

Rule changes at the beginning of the 2012 season meant that the blown diffusers used in the RB7 were now banned and the exhaust had to be redesigned to comply with new regulations. This cut down RBR’s advantage significantly resulting in a rather mild start to the year. Red Bull was no longer ‘the team to beat.’

For the first time in the history of Formula 1, the first 7 races were won by 7 different drivers hailing from 5 different teams. Although this meant more competition for Red Bull, the technical director-team principal partnerships of Adrian Newey and Christian Horner improved RB8 significantly over the course of the season and made sure it stayed ahead of the pack and at the top of the Constructors’ standing.

Some notable points from the season so far:

- The pre-season testing at Jerez and Barcelona showed that RBR had their work cut out for them.
Even during the tests, Mercedes, McLaren and Lotus matched Red Bull’s pace.

- Though Vettel managed a 2nd place finish in the first race at Albert Park, RB8’s lack of pace was immediately exposed when they failed to get a podium finish in next two races.

- Mark Webber has won two races so far and cemented his position in the team for next year as well. The Aussie recently signed a fresh contract with the Milton Keynes-based marque which will see him driving the bull till the end of 2013.

- Since Vettel is already on the contract till 2014, RBR is the only team to have their driver lineup fixed for the next season. This ensures that they don’t deal with any discomfort in the pits when the driver market heats up in the coming weeks.

- Unlike other teams, RBR has been smart enough to do small upgrades to their car in every race. As a result, RB8 is much faster and more reliable than it was at the start of the season.

- One of the most significant and controversial changes was made to the car owing to a directive issued by the FIA. Mark Webber’s Monaco GP winning car had a hole in the floor and though no official complaint was made by other teams, FIA declared the hole to be illegal and RBR were asked to change the design by the next race i.e. Canadian GP.

- One thing that Mark and Seb need to work on is the number of podium finishes.

Alonso with 164 points has grabbed six podiums so far. Webber’s two podium finishes have come in the form of victories at Monaco and Silverstone, while Vettel (122), who is two points behind Webber has tasted the bubbly thrice. Surprisingly, Hamilton (117) and Raikkonen (116) have been on the podium five times each.

Despite a tough season start, RBR are scoring well. They’re currently leading the Constructors’ Championship, and Mark Webber & Sebastian Vettel are current 2nd and 3rd in the Drivers’ Championship. With Webber two points ahead of Vettel and the latter enjoying a 6-5 head-to-head lead in terms of finishes over his Aussie teammate, it seems that this fight will go down to the wire.

The only thing left to be seen now is if Adrian Newey and Christian Horner can bring RB8 up to pace and give both their drivers a shot at the ultimate glory – the Drivers’ Championship.

So tighten your seatbelts and keep your fingers crossed, the second half of the F1 season is going to be one helluva ride!

Predictions vs. Current Scenario

Formula One universe is right now enjoying it's mid-season break. While it's a much needed break for the drivers and team personnel, most F1 fans are showing withdrawal symptoms. We're at the halfway mark with 11 races behind us and 9 more to go. Many fans and experts have given their predictions, and given the ambiguity of the results, most failed to predict it correctly.
Like many others, I also took the liberty of putting down my own predictions. You can find my predictions here.

The 2012 season is at the halfway mark, on a scale from 0 to Nostradamus, let's see how good I am at predictions.

Mclaren
Prediciton: McLaren will lift the Constructors' Trophy. Jenson Button is one of the two guys who has a fighting chance for the Driver's Championship. Lewis Hamilton on the other hand will finish 4th or 5th fastest.
Current Scenario: They're 2nd in Constructors', behind RBR.Hamilton is right now 4th while Button is struggling in 7th.

Red Bull Racing
Prediciton: RB8 is not looking too good this time around and I'm expecting RBR to finish 2nd, at best, possibly 3rd. Christian Horner will require to fuel this time on Red Bulls (that shouldn't be difficult) and put some extra hours if he wants to repeat last year's success. Sebastian Vettel will be the third or fourth best driver this season, while Mark Webber will happily continue being the second driver in the team. He might also end up being Red Bull Racing's Massa by the end of the season.
Current Scenario: It's true that RBR have been their shadow in this season, however, they're currently leading the Constructors' standings. Vettel is 3rd in Drivers', but I have been completely off the mark about Webber. He is right now 2nd, behind Alonso and only growing stronger. Moreover, he has signed a fresh contract and will be at Milton Keynes for 2013, as well.

Ferrari
Prediciton: Constructor's Championship is a distant dream and it seems Ferrari will need to fight really hard just to hold on to their last year's no. 3 position. Despite F2012 lacking the race pace, I believe Alonso is one of the two guys (other one being Button, as earlier stated) who has the potential to steal the World Champion crown from Vettel. However, his teammate Massa lies at the other end of the spectrum, who will fight for his survival in the team and he'll be lucky if he doesn't get replaced before the Brazilian GP.
Current Scenario: I have been spot on with Ferrari predictions. Ferrari are struggling in the Constructors, but somehow Alonso is able to extract 200% out of his F2012 and is leading the Drivers' standings. Massa has showed some signs of improvement compared to 2011 but he's no where close to his 2008 form where he came within 1 point of winning the championship.

Mercedes
Prediciton: Mercedes looks like the only team that can match McLarens pace and they should end the season pretty close at the top. Probably in second place. Michael Schumacher will rake in few wins and he may have a big say in deciding the World Champion. Nico won't be able to outclass Schumi this time around but he will continue to be one of the best middle-pack drivers, notching up a podium or two along the way.
Current Scenario: I've been wrong about Mercedes. Somehow, they haven't been able to convert their qualifying pace into race pace. Schumi has not raked a single win yet and has got just one podium finish alongwith multiple DNFs. Compared to him, Nico has one win to his name.

Lotus
Prediciton: Lotus will be often seen fighting for the podium in the races to come and they may end the season in 5th place. The Iceman will surely leave his mark on the season with a podium or two. Grosjean will come of age and as he gains more experience, he'll stop making rookie mistakes and we'll see him crossing the finishing line in top 5, few times during the season.
Current Scenario: I have been spot on with Lotus' prediction. The team has fought for podiums in majority of the race. Kimi has yet to win a race but he has already racked 5 podiums. Grosjean is talented but he has made plenty of rookie mistakes. However, he too has stepped on podium thrice, already.

Sahara Force India
Prediciton: Force India will find it exceedingly tough to hold on to their last year's 6th place and may even slip to 7th. Their second half of the season will be much better compared to the first half. Nico will take few races to warm up but later on he will outperform his teammate. Paul may face pressure from within the team once Nico starts performing better.
Current Scenario: As expected, SFI has moved down and are currently in 8th place. Spot on with Nico & Paul's prediction too. At the end of first 7 races, Di Resta outclassed Hulkenberg 6-1. But Nico made a comeback and finished ahead of his teammate in next 4 races and as of now, Paul is barely leading this head-to-head battle, with 6-5 from 11 races. However, neither driver is able to make any significant impact compared their mid-pack rivals in Williams & Sauber.

Sauber
Prediciton: Sauber will give Force India a run for it's money and will probably trump them by the end of the season. Kobayashi will come of age in this season and get the recognition he deserves while Perez may replace a shaken-up Brazilian in a bigger team.
Current Scenario: Sauber has certainly blown away Force India and now they have set their eyes on taking on the big boys. Both, Kobayashi & Perez are giving tough competition in Q3 and are not easy to overtake in the race, either.

Toro Rosso
Prediction: STR will spend the whole season fighting SFI & Williams. Sauber may prove a bit too strong for them. Ricciardo will show few flashes of brilliance and will concentrate on building a reputation of finishing in top 10 while his rookie teammate Verge will look to learn as much as possible and won't prove too much of a scare to any of the top10 drivers.
Current Scenario: STR haven't been much of a scare to SFI or Williams. Ricciardo & Verge have finished in points once so far, but nothing much apart from that.

Williams
Prediction: Williams & Sauber are going to lead the middle-pack for most part of the season. Maldonado & Senna are more or less equally matched and their friendly competition will benefit the team as whole. Maldonado may outpace the Brazilian 60-40.
Current Scenario: Williams & Sauber are ahead of SFI and looking good. In a head-to-head comparision, Senna is ahead 6-5, in terms of finishes. But the win at Catalunya means that Maldonado has more points. However, since then, Maldonado has been in the news for all the wrong reason. Since Spain, Maldonado has been nothing but pain. Almost making everyone realize that maybe that win was just a flash in the pan. Now, that rhymes!

Caterham
Prediction: Technical issues will haunt the team for most part of the season and they'll barely managed to stay ahead of Marussia & HRT. Petrov will outpace Kovalainen by some margin.
Current Scenario: Caterham, Marussia and HRT are the bottom most teams with 0 points but the only reason Caterham is ahead of the other two is because they have finished in higher position. But Petrov hasn't been able to outpace Kovalainen.

Marussia
Prediction: Marussia will battle it out with HRT to avoid last place finish and will pull it off with ease. Timo will finish higher than Pic most of the times but Pic's flashes of brilliance will make everyone realize that the rookie is more talented.
Current Scenario: Marrusia has just managed to stay above HRT, as expected. Timo has outpaced Pic 7-4. However, we haven't seen much from Pic. Let's see if he can prove his worth in second half.

HRT
Prediction: HRT will race rest of the races. And fight Marussia to avoid last place finish but they'll fail to do so at most times. Narain Karthikeyan will be in news for various reasons.
Current Scenario: "HRT will race rest of the races," was stated in reference to HRT not able to quality in 107% time at the the Australian GP. Well, that prediction has come true. They have also stayed last throughout the season, as expected. And Karthikeyan was in news after he was handed 20 second penalty for his collision with Vettel that cost the double WC his 4th place. Adding insult to injury, Vettel called him "idiot backmarker."

2012 Australian GP: McLaren pressed the right Button

McLaren drivers celebrating at the Australian GP (Image Courtesy: McLaren)
After the more-surprising-than-expected qualifying session of the first race of the season, the starting grid looked curious since the front row lacked Christian Horner's bulls. The front row was locked by the McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton (P1) & Jenson Button (P2), while the 2nd row had surprises in the form of Lotus' Romain Grosjean & the seven time World Champion Michael Schumacher. The Red Bulls were as far as third row while the first Ferrari, that of Alonso, was on P12.

But the qualifying was just the tip of the iceberg, the bigger spectacle was the definitely the race. At the end of 58 laps, Jenson Button was the first to cross the finish line followed by the reigning World Champion Sebastain Vettel, while the last step of the podium was secured by Button's team mate Lewis Hamilton.

Though there's going to be in-season testing as well as other developments through the course of the season, but at the end of the first race everyone got an idea about the cars, drivers' form and the amount of work that needs to be done to achieve their targets.

Here are the findings from the first race.

McLaren: McLaren made a perfect start to their 2012 campaign with a front row qualifying and double podium finish at the Albert Park. McLaren also proved all the critics wrong, and showed that one doesn't need a platypus-nosed car to go fast; a fact that 10 other teams refuted at the start of the 2012 season. In fact, their MP4-27 is not just the best looking car on the grid but it's also the fastest.
Jenson Button: Looking at Button's success percentage in Melbourne, it won't be surprising if they rename the circuit to Button Park. This was Jenson Button's 3rd victory at Albert Park, in last 4 instances. This guy definitely looks like one of the two contenders whom I'd put my money on.
Lewis Hamilton: Though he finished the race in 3rd, he would be kicking himself, given the fact that he had qualified on P1. This guy sure has talent but he lacks the finesse that some other drivers have. Though he has one of the fastest car on the grid, in my opinion he would end the season as 4th or 5th fastest.
Prediction for the season: McLaren will lift the Constructor's Trophy. Jenson Button is one of the 2 guys who has a fighting chance for the Driver's Championship. Lewis Hamilton on the other hand will finish 4th or 5th fastest.

Red Bull Racing: After the Brazilian GP last year, while all the other teams were working hard to build a car for the 2012 season, Red Bull engineer were busy holidaying. Or sleeping. Either of the two. Red Bull seems to have taken a step backwards with RB8. The car is no match for McLaren & if you look at the numbers from qualifying and pre-season testing, even Mercedes is faster than RBR.
Sebastian Vettel: Though Abbey isn't really up to the mark, Vettel still managed to finish in 2nd position, living up to his World Champion reputation.
Mark Webber: He had a reasonable weekend where he qualified in P5 and crossed the finish line in 4th place.
Prediction: RB8 is not looking too good this time around and I'm expecting RBR to finish 2nd, at best, possibly 3rd.

Ferrari: At the end of pre-season testing, Ferrari admitted that they're not very confident of the car, and the race just proved their case.
Fernando Alonso: Despite qualifying in 12th place owing to his mistake in Q2 which saw him land in gravel trap, he brought his car home in a credible 5th position. He is delivering to his potential, now it's up to Ferrari to deliver him a car that can challenge for the podium.
Felipe Massa: This man is under all kinds of pressure and that is being reflected in his driving. In qualifying, he barely managed to get through to Q2 and despite Alonso's mistake, Massa still qualified 4 places below him. Though he made up place in the initial part of the race, bad luck continued to haunt him as he had to retire owing to extensive car damage after a racing incident with Bruno Senna.
Prediction: Constructor's Championship is a distant dream and it seems Ferrari will need to fight really hard just to hold on to their last year's no.

Mercedes: Mercedes have some good as well as bad news. Good news is that they certainly have the race pace and can easily out qualify Red Bull. While the bad news is that they'll need to work on reliability of the car. Mercedes was definitely the biggest disappointment on Sunday, given their qualifying status.
Michael Schumacher: After qualifying in 4th, everyone expected Schumacher to finish on podium but the faulty gearbox made him retire. This means that the "Old Schumi" is back and he has a car to match his potential; now if only Ross Brawn can make this car reliable too.
Nico Rosberg: Unlike his teammate, Nico did manage to finish the race but without any points. Pretty ordinary performance from him and the team.
Prediction: Mercedes looks like the only team that can match McLarens pace and they should end the season pretty close at the top. Probably in second place. Michael Schumacher will rake in few wins and he may have a big say in deciding the World Champion. Nico won't be able to outclass Schumi this time around but he will continue to be one of the best middle-pack drivers, notching up a podium or two along the way.

Lotus: Lotus has delivered a car that's much better than everyone expected. They are definitely the best-of-the-rest this season.
Kimi Raikkonen: Kimi's failure to get through to Q2 and Grosjean's P3 qualification got everyone doubting the Finn's abilities. But the Iceman's 7th place finish, 11 places higher his qualification, shut the critics up.
Romain Grosjean: The young man has talent but lacks experience. After a dream qualification debut with P3, he was expected to get his Lotus across the line on podium. But his race ended prematurely when Pastor Maldonado decided to take a closer look at his Lotus.
Prediction: Lotus will be often seen fighting for the podium in the races to come and they may end the season in 5th place. The Iceman will surely leave his mark on the season with a podium or two. Grosjean will come of age and as he gains more experience, he'll stop making rookie mistakes and we'll see him crossing the finishing line in top 5, few times during the season.

Sahara Force India: Along with his airlines, Dr. Mallya's F1 team also seems to have taken a dip. The team that showed so much promise at Barcelona pre-testing, seemed off-color in the race.
Nico Hulkenberg: The young guy who showed lot of promised the last time he was behind the wheel of the car, seems to be having trouble getting back to the Sunday racing. After out-qualifying his team mate on Saturday, the German failed to get past the first corner. He may take a race or two to get back to his racing best.
Paul di Resta: Paul was the only high point of SFI's Sunday as he managed to take the last point by finishing 10th.
Prediction: Force India will find it exceedingly tough to hold on to their last year's 6th place and may even slip to 7th. Their second half of the season will be much better compared to the first half. Nico will take few races to warm up but later on he will outperform his teammate. Paul may face pressure from within the team once Nico starts performing better.

Sauber: They had a dream start to the 2012 season. P6 & P8 is something they never thought they'd achieve and probably they're going to continue this form.
Kamui Kobayashi: This drive saw him defend his position from the former World Champion Kimi Raikkonen. The Japanese driver totally deserved his 6th place finish.
Sergio Perez: The best part about his drive was his fight with Ricciardo, di Resta & Verge for P8 on the very last lap. The four driver finished the race almost together.
Prediciton: Sauber will give Force India a run for it's money and will probably trump them by the end of the season. Kobayashi will come of age in this season and get the recognition he deserves while Perez may replace a shaken-up Brazilian in a bigger team.

Toro Rosso: A relatively decent race for STR, where for the most part they were racing their nearest rival SFI.
Daniel Ricciardo: Nearly overtook Perez on the last lap while avoiding being overtaken by Di Resta.
Jean-Eric Vergne: Biggest loser in the battle for P7 while fighting Perez, Di Resta & team mate Ricciardo. Finished 3 tenths of a second behind Perez and just 1 tenths of a second behind 10th place Paul.

Williams: The looked strong through out the weekend and the final race result doesn't do any justice to their pace.
Pastor Maldonado: The results show Maldonado classified as 13th place finish but when he started the last lap he was and chasing Alonso who was running in 5th place. An expensive mistake on the last lap saw his race ending in barriers. That doesn't take away the fact that Williams and Maldonado are in super form and they'll be back fighting for points and maybe even podiums.
Bruno Senna: His race ended prematurely owing to a racing incident with Felipe Massa. One of those rare accidents where the other driver didn't ruthlessly drove into the back of the Massa's car.
Prediction: Williams & Sauber are going to lead the middle-pack for most part of the season. Maldonado & Senna are more or less equally matched and their friendly competition will benefit the team as whole. Maldonado may outpace the Brazilian 60-40.

Caterham: The team looked a pale shadow of themselves and the reliability of the cars remains a big issue.
Heikki KovalainenVitaly Petrov qualified just ahead of the two Marussia drivers. And their race ended due to technical issues with the car.
Prediction: Technical issues will haunt the team for most part of the season and they'll barely managed to stay ahead of Marussia & HRT. Petrov will outpace Kovalainen by some margin.

Marussia: They secured the very last row of the grid. Only delight was that they managed to qualify for the race, unlike HRT, their nearest rival.
Timo Glock: There's a reason why he is still suck with as a back-marker team. His biggest contribution to F1 is and will be the 2008 Brazilian GP.
Charles Pic: After qualifying 22nd and last he failed to finish his the race on his debut.
Prediction: Marussia will battle it out with HRT to avoid last place finish and will pull it off with ease. Timo will finish higher than Pic most of the times but Pic's flashes of brilliance will make everyone realize that the rookie is more talented.

HRT: Failed to qualify for the race. Their cars weren't good enough to post a time inside the 107% time of the leader. Heartbreak for Pedro de la Rosa & Narain Karthikeyan.
Prediction: HRT will race rest of the races. And fight Marussia to avoid last place finish but they'll fail to do so at most times. Narain Karthikeyan will be in news for various reasons.

Force India drivers' thoughts ahead of the 2012 season

Paul thinks McLaren should be worried, while Nico is looking forward to a wet race
After weeks of driver speculations, unveiling of ugly noses and crash tests, the 2012 season is finally here. Well, almost. Pre-season Jerez & Barcelona Testing is also done and now everyone's waiting for the real deal. While the teams are packing bags to fly to Melbourne for the the first race of 2012, The Aerodynamics Project caught up with Sahara Force India drivers Paul Di Resta & Nico Hulkenberg and asked them about a Spanish city, ugly noses and 3 teenagers, among many things.

Here’s what they had to say:

Motorsport World: Last season Sahara Force India finished and this year the team is looking forward to finishing in top 5. Supposing Ferrari, McLaren & RBR takes the top 3 places in any order; SFI will be required to beat at least one of the Mercedes or Lotus, and given that both these teams have a World Champion, Schumi & Kimi, does that put any pressure on you?
Paul: Not at all. Of course, they’re World Champions and it is difficult but at the end of the day, they all are competitors & I’d want to beat them all. I’m not intimidated. Last year we the team performed really well and we actually punched above our weight and managed to secure 6th place. This year our goal is to do better than last year and get in top 5. Having said that, it’s going to be a difficult task just to hold on to P6.

Motorsport World: Due to the changes in FIA regulations, the nose cone design has been changed this year and all the teams except McLaren has opted for crooked-nose design. Would you have also preferred the smooth lines of VJM05 like that on McLaren instead of the crooked-nose?

Paul: I’d be slightly worried if I were McLaren, since it’s 11 against 1 as far as the nose design is concerned. And 11 opinions can’t be wrong.

Motorsport World: FIA has made certain changes in technical specifications due to which there have been few changes in design most notable of which have been the changes in exhaust and the nose cone. How much have these changes affected the down force, handling and balance of the car compared to last year?

Nico: If you see VJM04 & 05, it’s not night and day. There isn’t much difference in the performance. It’s still very similar, so you’ll see a very similar car in terms of performance.

Motorsport World: What kind of training you went through in order to get yourself back in a state that would enable you to race during the weekends, like in 2010?

Nico: Well training started in January and we did lots of simulator & workout training. I’ve been off racing since 14-15 months and hence I needed to get down to that same fitness level of racing on weekends once again.

Motorsport World: Barcelona Testing is done, you’ve got the feel of the car and everything. What are your first thoughts about the car? Do you think VJM05 is good enough to fight for the podiums?

Nico: If we have slightest advantage, slightest of chance, we will surely fight for it (podium). May be during a wet race when there will be confusion for the strategy or maybe under the safety car if we might get in front, then we can have a good chance. Otherwise, it’ll be very difficult.

Motorsport World: The whole field is divided in long and old drivers. On one hand, there are drivers like Schumacher & Kimi who are elder and much experienced, which at the other hand, there are young and relatively less experienced drivers like you, Vettel, Hamilton & others. Does that put any sort of pressure on the younger lot, like you?

Nico: No. In fact, this shows the kind of talent that we have in the field. Though they’re experienced, still if we can beat them, it’s great for us.

Motorsport World: Last time when I met you, you were judging FIDA - Force India Driver’s Academy’s One From a Billion Hunt's contestant. It’s been about 6 months since the winners have been announced and you must have seen their progress. Do you honestly think that any of them have the potential to step in your shoes and be a Formula One driver, 7 years from now?

Nico: Yes, I certainly think those 3 kids have full potential. Currently, I think they’re racing in Italy and given the right engine & setup, and training over the years, they’ll certainly do great. And like you said, 7-8 years down the line, they certainly have the potential to drive the Sahara Force India car someday.

Whether SFI can actually be one of the top 5 team remains to be seen, we certainly hope that Nico & Paul have a great 2012 season, and we wish them and the whole team good luck!
